went to check out two targets this eve, with hope of finding halloween completely installed, but alas...
west mifflin target has, at least, graphics already in place. there's a fantastic "boolevard" sign that spans a few aisles, candy carts made of cardboard with fantabulous skull-patterned wheels, and batty chandeliers that look very dimensional, even tho they're really just an x of cardboard. this decorative signage all employs holographic foil details that make them APPEAR to be electrical, when really they're just reflecting light. there are other signs around the store for "festival of fright". the graphics have a mexican/dias de los muertos/papel picado meets carnival meets colonial american patterns kind of vibe. so far it gets an A-, but we've only seen the tip of the iceberg...
men's halloween tshirts include a day of the dead selection, and a sublime/subtle smattering of skulls. the women's tshirts don't fare as well, with the best option being "sweet & sinister candy shop". men's halloween garb also includes spooky boxers (abbott & costello meet frankenstein?) and women might want to consider knit slippers with skull or "devilicious" tattoo appliques. the problem is that all of the women's garb's a little too cutesy. the skull appliques on those slippers -- they have glittery heart eye sockets.
bags of candy corn offer a chance to scratch & win $500 instantly on the enclosed gift card. seems that other halloween treats are going to offer this same opportunity. it's a cool promotion, esp since corn sales have probably been down. just a note on the corn itself: it's very rich-tasting for candy corn, and boasts being "made with real honey" on the front of the bag.
can't imagine they'd let the 3-day weekend go by without stocking tthe many, empty, halloween-awaiting shelves...so we'll check back soon. not that we want the target staff to be be-labored on labor day, but we want halloween!

Honey candy corn? I thought what made candy corn corn was high fructose corn syrup...perhaps they are anticipating the demand for ethanol to siphon from their supply of candy corn-making ingredients?

A week later and we've still got just candy & foods in the halloween aisles...
A couple notes on the foods, tho...pumpkin spice pretzel rods are well worth their $4 price! Jones has a line of Halloween sodas this year, altho it seems only the names are actually creepy. MAYBE we'll give these ones a try, presuming it won't be a repeat of last year's Thanksgiving soda...fiasco.
West Mifflin target had a very few select decor & costume items already out. Decor included skulls on candlesticks and skull snowdomes. Both are valiant efforts and kind of elegant. They've also posted a giant "Monster Market" display...which is very promising...but has yet to be filled with its wares. Stay tuned.
Half a week since the last comment, and the Waterfront Target's rolled out a FEW items...
On the BACK of the Monster Martket display, there are some acrylic lamps...the cylindrical Frankenstein head is nice. There's also an endcap partially full of black metal things - haunted houses, gnarled trees, and some candle holders. The candle holders are worth a look because they're only $2 each and have a nice shape. They're quasi-colonial, and have a spider web on one side.
The Halloween domestic goods are also out -- there are some fun towels for kitchen & bath with skeletons. There's also a nice skeleton welcome mat. Some feature a cat with a fuzzy fur tail, it's very girly. The domestic ghosts & pumpkins are just too cutesy for me.
That's still about all there is to report.
